At the centre of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace, with exclusive Ginza and the commercial Marunouchi to the east. Heading west you'll find food-capital Akasaka next door to clubbers' delight Roppongi, and then 'modern West versus chaotic East' Shinjuku. Ikebukuro is in the northwest, and the cultural centre of Ueno and traditional Asakusa is to the northeast. The sheer level of energy is the most striking aspect of Japan's capital city. Tokyo is a place where the urgent rhythms of consumer culture collide with the quieter moments that linger from older traditions. It's hectic madness leavened by the Zennest of calms. While it's true the exciting vibe has a somewhat depressing flip side - shoebox housing estates and office blocks traversed by overhead expressways crowded with traffic - Tokyo remains a glittering example of the 'miracle' of post-WWII Japan. Despite all the hyper-construction, the traditional Tokyo suburb hasn't been completely trounced: in the shadows of skyscrapers, streets are still lined with tiny specialist shops and bustling restaurants open late into the night; and you can still sense a bygone era in an ancient wooden house, a Japanese inn, an old lady in a kimono sweeping the pavement outside her home with a straw broom. It was a full backpack trip, and that was incredibly tiring. The scale was quite daunting - 5 countries and almost twenty cities within one month. The documentation of the destinations and digitalisation of the pictures as included herein were unprecedented exhausting as well. But as with all things, when you look back, it doesn't seem so bad after all. These pictures are arranged chronologically by day. Over several million years, the Colorado River has carved an immense chasm through an arid land - one of the greatest geological features of its kind. The layers of rock exposed in the canyon walls record much of the geologic history of North America. But it is the sheer visual impact of the landscape that impresses most people. The world seems larger here with sunrises, sunsets, and storms taking on an added dimension to match the landscape. It is a land to humble the soul. Las Vegas is a spectacular city, incomparable to any other. Recognized all over the world, the famous Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) is where tourists can enjoy a walk in the warm desert evening, or take a stroll downtown and view a dazzling light show that spans an entire street — the Fremont Street Experience. You can also get a glimpse of amazing world famous re-creations like erupting volcanoes, the Eiffel Tower and the Sphinx of Egypt. These pictures capture some of the interesting sites and sounds you can see along the Strip in the direction towards Los Angeles. Honestly I like the SF pictures a whole lot more than the NY ones. Maybe it's because I didn't put in enough thought while taking photos during my NY trip. Or maybe I've happened to run into a really skilled developer for my SF pics. Or maybe it's because I really enjoyed my stay in SF a lot. And I can't really explain why I like SF so much. Maybe it's the hills and steep slopes coupled with my height phobia that makes everything so much more thrilling. Or maybe it's the people there - they are much less racist towards Asians; There were times when I just dished out my map for quick reference, and people just come up and ask if I need help with directions. Or maybe it's because this was my very first trip where I get to decide on the itinerary and explore at leisure. Or maybe it's just because I learnt so much about the place prior to the trip. Well, here's a list of movies, videos and dramas that are based in/filmed in SF: - short-lived drama Killer Instincts - Lee Ang's The Hulk - Matthew McConaughey's EdTV - The Rock starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage - Brendan Fraser's George of the Jungle - Sweet November starring Keanu Reeves and Charliz Theron - N Sync's MTV for "This I Promise You" - 98 degrees' MTV for "Because of You" - Tony Shalhoub's TV Series Monk - Brooke Shields's sitcom Suddenly Susan - Aaron Spelling's Charmed Again these pictures were taken via a film camera, and subsequently "digitised" using a scanner (or a digital camera in some cases). It 's also relatively empty - the population is a mere 3.6 million, less than that of Singapore. Bearing in mind that 50% of Auckland, Christchurch and the capital, Wellington, it's clear that there's still plenty of room for visitors. Being an island country, New Zealand has a great deal of coastline, in fact more than 15,000 kilometres. It's also extremely mountainous. What many peple don't realise is that Ruapehu, Mgauruhoe, Tongariro and Taranake and other mountains on the North Island are dormant volcanoes. The South Island too has some spectacular snow-covered peaks, more than 20 of which rise to over 3,000 metres. New Zealand also boasts miles of pristine beaches, glacial lakes and fjords, majestic rivers and vast tracts of primeval forest and native bush. Amazingly, even today there are some isolated spots that may never have seen a human being. Since its earliest days, New York has scoffed at the timid offerings of other American cities. It boasts the most immigrants, the tallest skyscrapers, the biggest museum in the Western Hemisphere, and its plenty of large landfills. Even the vast blocks of concrete have their own gritty charm. New York City is full of folks. The stars are invisible behind the array of lights. The buildings soar, the subways scream, the people scramble. All is rushed. There may be grime, but for every inch of it, there’s a yard of silver lining. Countless people mean countless pockets of culture - you can find every kind of ethnicity, food, art, language, attitude. There’s flamenco at an outdoor café, jazz in historic speakeasies, house and techno in a flashy club - whatever the question, New York has the answer. This trip took place from 18 to 26 July 2002. The weather was incredibly hot in Manhattan, but the good thing is that the days were long. It became totally dark only at about 2200 hours. <A HREF="http://amazing_race.tripod.com/">Click here for an Architectural Tour of Manhatten.</A> These pictures were taken via a film camera, and subsequently "scanned" using my new Nikon digital camera.
