The Nakamise-dori leads to the courtyard of Senso-ji. Dedicated to the goddess Kannon, Senso-ji is the heart and soul of Asakusa. Come for its local and historical importance, its gardens, its 17th-century Shintou shrine, and the wild Sanja Matsri. The Five-Storey Pagoda and the Main Hall of Senso-ji are faithful copies in concrete of originals that burned down in 1945. It took 13 years, when most of the people were still rebuilding their own war-torn lives, to raise money for the restoration. To them, it is far more than a tourist attraction.
