Restaurants, offices, banks, bars, clubs and most of the sights are concentrated around the Octagon, and the shopping district stretches immediately north and south along George Street and Princes Street. Many eateries are strung along George Street, particularly fro the junction with Hanover Street for two blocks, heading away from the Octagon. As the evening draws in, Dunedin shifts into a higher gear, especially during term time or one of its many festivals. Drinking is taken seriously here and there's no shortage of pubs and bars, many of them student hangouts where local bands play at weekends, plus some of the cafes double up as bars or clubs.
